The KinderMourn Home
The KinderMourn Home

"When a child dies...when a child grieves" is a chilling phrase and yet reflects the work of KinderMourn.

The most profound sense of loss parents can feel is to experience the death of their child.  The sadness is overwhelming because we expect children to outlive their parents.  When a child dies, parents are thrust into an all pervasive grief, affecting every aspect of their lives.  Brothers, sisters, extended family members and friends are also deeply affected by the death.

Established in 1978, KinderMourn addresses the special needs of grieving parents.  Its fundamental purpose, firmly incorporated by the founding Board of Directors, remains true today: "KinderMourn exists to provide a safe haven for parents whose lives have been shattered by the death of a child".  The age of the child does not matter.  KinderMourn is also sensitive to the devastation in pregnancy loss and assists parents who experience a miscarriage, stillbirth or newborn death.

In addition to its services for bereaved parents, KinderMourn helps children and teens cope with the death of a family member or friend.  With support and guidance, young people learn to identify their feelings and discover healthy ways of expressing them.  KinderMourn's professional grief facilitators also provide group counseling in area schools.  This outreach program, called Helping The Hurt, was initiated by the agency in 1992 and has supported thousands of bereaved youth.

For thirty-three years, KinderMourn has provided a special program in this community...offering comfort, empathy, understanding and hope.
